With the emergence of quantum computing, smart home technology, and more inter-connectivity of our devices, we are on the precipice of a surge in technological advancement that will change how we operate in business and how we live our daily lives. To support the looming advancement in technology, many ISPs (internet service providers) are already scrambling to build the infrastructure to handle larger volumes of data while interconnecting multiple platforms. Technologies of the future must be automated, intelligent, and dynamic in a way to accommodate future applications that have not been dreamed of yet.
But… building data infrastructure is not enough. Industries looking to embrace IoT must also be willing to embrace more automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence technologies. From a user standpoint, more users want their devices or platforms to be smart enough to recognize what they want with minimal input from the user.
For many, AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning may pose concerns on future job prospects. This is 100% true: many tasks traditionally performed by humans are going to be replaced by automation. This is a natural evolution with emerging IoT technologies. However, IoT intelligent employers and job seekers understand that there is significant opportunity for new careers in a world of automation and machine learning, and this will happen on a global scale.

1. The Disciplined Mind
A disciplined mind is one that has mastered multiple disciplines. In years past, it may have taken an individual 10 years or more to be considered a master of their discipline. In the future, individuals may have to be considered experts in multiple fields in a much shorter amount of time while interconnecting these disciplines.
2. The Synthesizing Mind
Right now, we live in the information age. At no time in human history have we had access to so much information literally at the palm of hands; but, we also live in an age of mis-information or too much information. A synthesizing mind has the keen ability to sift through information, and quickly ascertain its importance or relevance. A synthesizing mind must also keep their mind on the goal while not getting lost in the details.
3. The Creating Mind
Perhaps the most important mindset IoT companies will seek is the Creating Mind. Currently, telecom and mobile companies have had the challenge of building the infrastructure to handle large amounts of data to support future IoT needs (many of which have not been invented yet). Many companies from the telecom industry right down to mobile app startups are seeking the creative mind to meet IoT challenges.
While a disciplined mind and a synthesizing mind are important, companies will not be able to compete in a world of IoT without the creating mind. It is important to note that creating new ideas is not enough, there must be an execution of these ideas by influencing others.
4. A Respectful Mind
When using a design thinking mindset with a diverse set of individuals, a Respectful Mind is essential to work collaboratively. Design thinking and brain storming will not work if individuals do not respect each other’s ideas or their individuality. Not only may individuals harbor prejudice against other groups or individuals, they may also have internal biases that need to be overcome. Effective leaders and influencers will create a culture of inclusiveness where all ideas or welcome.
5. The Ethical Mind:
IoT itself is going to raise concerns of trust with consumers and businesses and employers should be seeking individuals with an ethical mind. IoT services and devices that connect to the internet must collect an enormous amount of data on individuals to provide the personalized experience that consumers want. Ethics is not just a simple matter of complying with current laws, ethics is a matter of following the principals that most consumers value.
Further complicating the issue of ethics, ethical behavior of one individual may differ from what is considered ethical for another individual. Especially when conditions are changing rapidly, leaders gauging what is ethical can be challenging. There is no clear answer for leaders to gauge ethics, but being aware of the market, what their consumers value, and creating a culture of ethical behavior can be extremely important.
